1st Convocation of Gono Bishwabidyalay

Gono Bishwabidyalay celebrated its first convocation on 12th January, 2011 at the PHA auditoriun of Gonoshasthaya Kendra at Mirzanagor, Savar. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid MP presided over the convocation ceremony on behalf of the Chancellor of the University and honorable President of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh Mr. Md. Zillur Rahman. Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh Prof. Nazrul Islam graced the occasion as the special guest. Professor Dr. A.F Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University was the convocation speaker. 624 graduates from three faculties, Health and Medical Sciences, Basic and Social Sciences and Post-graduate Studies were awarded certificates in the convocation. The Treasurer, the Deans and members of the Trustee Board of the Gono Bishwabidyalay and the Gonoshasthaya Kendra, Vice-Chancellors and Pro Vice-Chancellors from different universities and local elites were present in the convocation.

Ms. Tahurunnesa Abdullah, President of the Gono Bishwabidyalay Treustee Board welcomed the guest’s and graduates on behalf of the university. Prof. Dr. M. Shahidullah, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university also gave a welcome speech. Prof. Mesbahuddin Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of the university in his speech outlined the background of the foundation of the university, its aim and objectives and categorically expressed that the University has no commercial bias and has been maintaining the standard of education right from the beginning. The University’s aim is to develop the human resources and help the students to turn out to be a complete and patriotic man.

Professor Dr. A.F Sirajul Islam Chowdhury in his convocation speech commented that the activities of Gono Bishwabidyalay are highly admirable. He was happy to see that the university is led by the spirit of freedom struggle and liberation war, provide education to the poor backward population of the country and endeavoring to do away with gender difference. He opined that a university is not only an institution for imparting book-based knowledge but also a centre to generate in the students the sense of responsibilities and obligation to the society at large. He specially emphasized on the course curriculum of the university which embodies ethics, gender issues, history of Bangladesh and environmental science besides the core courses. According to him such subjects should be a part of curriculum of the other universities.

The special guest Prof. Nazrul Islamin in his speech appreciated the way the Gono Bishwabidyalay is progressing. He was glad to see that the university is due to shift to their permanent campus very soon. He commended that with the successful holding of the first convocation today and shifting to the permanent campus the university will obtain the state of category 1 university. He expects that the expansion of the university will be carried out in a pragmatic way and standard of education will be maintained.

The education minister in his inaugural speech said that he was happy to see that Gono Bishwabidyalay has progressed admirably since its foundation in 1998. He expressed his hope that the authorities of the university will maintain this trend and uphold the standard of education. He categorically opined that the ministry does not differentiate between the public and the private universities. The ministry is interested to see that the standard of education is maintained in a meaningful way, whether it is in the public or private university. He expressed his dissatisfaction towards the activities of some private universities which are being conducted with commercial interest. The government wants to see an end to this type of mentality. He urged that the private universities should have a judicious outlook in fixing the fees for the students and provide required opportunities for the poor and meritorious students. The universities should build proper library, laboratories for imparting standard education. The students should be so equipped that they can compete with those of the advanced countries.

Mr. Md. Delwar Hossain, Registrar of the university conducted the convocation proceedings and offered thanks to the distinguished guests, teachers and the graduates.
